Brighton were amazed when Akinde gave Dagenham a shock lead with a deflected shot passed helpless keeper Casper Ankergren. Seagulls winger Craig Noone crashed a 25-yard drive against the bar before Brighton struck twice in the place of a minute.
A little corner from Elliott Bennett was fired towards goal by Adam El-Abd and stand-captain Inigo Calderon produced the last match on the goalline. And Gus Poyet`s side went ahead 60 seconds later through leading marksman Glenn Murray, who pounced for his 21st goal of the season after Marcos Painter crossed deep to the far post.
Dagenham made it 2-2 three minutes afterwards the interval when Jon Nurse struck with a deflected shot, and Danny Green put the Daggers ahead for the 2nd time three minutes late from the penalty spot after El-Abd brought down Akinde.
But midfielder Liam Bridcutt pulled Brighton back even after 57 minutes with an unstoppable 25-yard drive into the top corner, and substitute Ashley Barnes hit the victor by bearing in a Bennett corner from the heart of the six-yard box.
It affected them 16 points clear of second-placed Southampton who were amazed by in-form Rochdale 2-0 at Spotland.
Joe Thompson and Chris O`Grady scored in the low half for the internal side, who were promoted last season, and who surged into the play-off places for the 1st time this season.
Walsall dragged themselves out of the fall zone with a 3-2 home win over Brentford.
Jonathan Macken`s brace cancelled out Pim Balkestein`s opener for the visitors. Lewis Grabban equalised but Jordan Cook won it on 57 minutes for Walsall.
A Dean Bowdich double gave Yeovil a 2-1 win over struggling Notts County, who replied through John Spicer.
