An improved mechanical seal is provided, wherein an annular inner flange extending from a gland plate having inlet and outlet openings is provided with a serial of notches between the inlet and the exit openings, the notches running in the counsel of gyration of the beam about which the stamp is attached. The annular inner flange extends inwardly toward and end to the shaft.
